Disc brake rims have a few advantages over rim brakes, one of them being that there is no need for a reinforced brake track, and therefore, weight at the rim can be reduced. This means no rim to wear out, a good thing if you ride a lot in all conditions, or if you do a lot of off road miles. The weight saving is doubly useful as it happens to be rotational mass, and is therefore a very good place to save weight on a bike.
I've listed 36mm rim build options but other depths are available. Please just get in touch. These are the disc version of the rims I use for rim brake builds. The rims are made up of Toray T700 carbon fibre (same as the majority of carbon rim manufacturers) for it's ideal combination of robustness and light weight. The rims listed are 28mm external width (21mm internal), making them ideal for 25mm road tyres, if you're looking to optimise aerodynamics. However, the wide, tubeless rims will also provide a great platform for wider cyclocross and gravel tyres, offering the ability to run lower pressures and much improved grip.
I can build these up with Bitex BX106 centrelock hubs for a good value, solid performing carbon wheelset. These hubs are light and the geometry is also good, which is an important factor in the stiffness of a hand built set of wheels (it will feel better to ride and be more reliable).
Hope RS4 is the British offering as they are made in Barnoldswick and they’re a very solid option. You get a sense for the quality of these hubs and they are reliable, 4 season hubs that are easy to maintain when it comes to replacing bearings. They are good value compared to more premium options but Bitex hubs perform similarly for less cost.
For a high end set of hubs, offering very low weight and top performance, I can build these up with DT Swiss 240 EXP centrelock hubs. These are light, have improved geometry over previous DT versions, and feature DT’s elegant ratchet design freehub.
